Cattle: Happy Valentines to you and yours! The cattle market does not fail to keep the blood pumping! We did see pressure from the Mexican boarder opening. At least that is what the sell off was “blamed” on. Also, the boxed beef has shown weakness with choice down to $315. Packers are shortening kills which may lend support to boxed beef. Fats are holding in the $202 to $203 range in the southern plains. It does appear we have seen the high on the feeders here in the short term. Markets were softer this week except for some stick out groups. One interesting note is that Jan 25 saw slightly higher auction numbers than Jan 2024. I expect the cold weather to move the headcounts down in February. All in all, the feeder and calf markets are still historically high. The feeder cattle index at $274 it about $35/cwt higher than the same time last year!! We will see the 5-700# market for grazable steers to continue bullish strength into April. Bred cows have held steady and we will soon be seeing pairs in the offering in the south central markets. This two weeks of bitter cold we are seeing now is definitely a challenge to the customers I have visited with. We are ready for Spring! Have a great week!
