Last Week’s Responses— 9/8

Not currently, but I monitor for predators:

👤 Coyotes are a continuous problem, especially when the numbers get high.

👤 We have a few bobcats in the area also coyotes. I have had a few calves get killed.

Occasional, but still a concern:

👤 Mostly coyotes, possibly wolf

Not an issue on my operation:

👤 See a lot of coyotes but they don’t seem to bother the cattle

A significant and ongoing problem:

👤 Hogs and coyotes in Central Texas

👤 Grizzley Bears, killed $50,000 worth of cattle two years ago, $18,000 the year before. Last year they trapped and killed 3 bears in one night and the problem stopped. This year we have had no kills.

👤 We live in eastern Arizona where they put Mexican wolves in 28 years ago. The effects on predators already here and the prey base were not fully evaluated, so now we have an over abundance of predators and dwindling wild prey in our area. We have tried everything recommended for “conflict avoidance” and it may work a little while. Our country is rough and rugged, so monitoring is difficult. We bring the mamas and babies to our private and feed them and in spite of monitoring closely the wolves, lions, bears, and coyotes still come in and kill or injure. We now have LG dogs, but they’re still fairly young. While our daughter had them out on the range in a problem area and a pack of wolves were an uncollared pack came in and killed a calf in daylight not far from our home.
