Today’s multi-trillion dollar global trade industry got it’s start all the way back in 1st century BC when a truly remarkable phenomenon occurred… for the first time in history, luxury products from China started to appear on the other edge of the Eurasian continent. By the end of the 15th century true global trade began as European explorers connected East and West, accidentally discovering the Americas in the process. The first documented export from China to the U.S. was in 1784, when the American ship, Empress of China, sailed to Guangzhou and returned with teas, silks, and table china. This voyage marked the beginning of formal trade relations between the two countries that would expand significantly in the years to come growing both countries into the two largest exporters today.
