WEDNESDAY WIRE: CHARTS & TRENDS

When it comes to ruminants green doesn’t always mean “go”. Get your salad eaters to a buffet they really want by learning about how and what livestock eats.

Goats and sheep are built for steeper terrain and have little mouths that allow them to be selective about what they eat. Shrubs, trees, and broadleaves are more their style with grass making up around 50% of the diet for sheep and 30% for goats.

Cattle don’t have prehensile lips to let them pick and choose, so they fair better on flat land where they can get 70% grass for their meal.

If your land is a mix, grazing multiple species can often be complementary!
