Gas prices remain a highly visible strain on household budgets, but this map shows just how uneven that burden is across the country. As of March 11th, the national average climbed to $3.58 per gallon, with California standing alone above $5 while much of the Plains and Midwest stayed near the low-$3 range—highlighting a more than $2 gap between the highest- and lowest-cost states. Since March 11, prices have shown signs of easing as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East cooled and crude oil pulled back from recent highs. While the national average has edged slightly lower in recent days, regional disparities remain firmly in place, with the West still leading the nation in higher fuel costs.
